The Importance of Content
Many peoples conception of SEO involves selecting a competitive keyword and performing some heavy optimization on that keyword. An equally important part of SEO is to start to rank for many less competitive keywords across a wide range of pages on your site. If done properly, the traffic you can receive in this way will far exceed the traffic generated by your few higher volume keywords.
To implement such a strategy, there are a few primary components. Firstly you need a lot of content across many pages of your site. Secondly, this content should be optimized in a way that targets low competition, or “long tail” keywords that receive good traffic in relation to other low competition keywords.
A typical long tail keyword may consist of four words. It may of course be less than that, providing the competition is low when measuring the number of competing entries in Google (using quotes in your Google search when assessing the competition).
A typical way to exploit this may be to find a low competition long tail keyword relating to your niche, write an article or a review based on that keyword and use the keyword in a pages title, its H1 tag and a couple of times in the text. If your have been performing solid link building on your site in general, putting this optimized page on your site with the appropriate internal linking strategy may be enough to capture a good position for the long tail keyword alone. If it’s not quite enough, securing a few links pointing to the new page with the long tail keyword as anchor text should do the job.
This process should then be rinsed and repeated. Each new article will increase your traffic. As a by-product of this process, your site will start to generate a lot of content. In addition to the extra traffic received by your targeted long tail keywords, the volume of content that will end up resulting from this can generate large quantities of traffic from keywords you do not expect and have not targeted. This will simply occur due to the large amount of words present on your site, combined with your general link building efforts.
There is a saying in the SEO community “Content is King”. When you hear this saying, what we have just talked about here is what it is all about.
